Do you want to take part in democracy in Iceland?

The municipal elections will be held on May 16th, and now is the chance to learn about your rights, understand better how municipalities work, and meet other immigrants who want to take part and make an impact.
We invite you to an informative and enjoyable workshops where you:

•  learn about your rights and the elections

•  understand better the role of municipal councils

• meet other people, discuss important topics and share experiences

• get practical tools to participate in democracy

Workshops available:

• Educational workshop, Saturday February 28^th from 10:00 – 16:00. Lunch will be served.
• Campaign workshop: Sunday March 1^st from 13:00 – 16:00. Children are welcome.

The workshops will be held at Amtsbókasafnið á Akureyri (Municipal Library), Brekkugötu 17.

Participation is free, snacks will be served and everyone is warmly welcome.

The project My Vote - My Voice // Mitt Atkvæði - Mín Rödd is supported by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing and implemented in cooperation with Svalbarðsstrandarhreppur, Eyjarfjarðarsveit, Grenivík (Grýtubakkahreppur) and Hörgársveit.

It was the Kveikur episode "26 thousand voices that are not heard" that inspired the project, which discussed the limited voting participation of residents with a foreign background in the 2022 local elections. Here is a short abstract of the episode with English translation “Why should immigrants vote”.

Akureyrarbær ásamt nágranna sveitarfélögunum Svalbarðsstrandarhreppur, Eyjarfjarðarsveit, Grenivík (Grýtubakkahreppur) og Hörgársveit standa saman að vinnustofum fyrir íbúa sveitarfélaganna af erlendum uppruna í aðdraganda sveitarstjórnarkosninga.

Fyrri vinnustofan fer fram laugardaginn 28. febrúar og hefst kl. 10 og stendur til kl. 16. Þar fer fram fræðsla um kosningarétt íbúa með erlent ríkisfang, stjórnmálakerfið með áherslu á sveitarstjórnarstigið, m.a. hlutverk sveitarstjórna, leiðir til að hafa áhrif á sveitarstjórnarmál og framkvæmd kosninga, þ.m.t. val kjósenda, útlit kjörseðla, gild og ógild atkvæði, kjörstaðir og fleira. Hádegismatur í boði.

Seinni vinnustofan fer fram sunnudaginn 1. mars og hefst kl. 13 og stendur til kl. 16:00. Þar fá þátttakendur tækifæri til að taka þátt í samfélagsmiðlaherferð undir slagorðinu Mitt Atkvæði – Mín Rödd / Þitt Atkvæði – Þín Rödd með gerð eigin Raddar-veggspjalda. Veggspjöldin verða síðan birt á Facebook svæði verkefnisins ásamt öðrum röddum víðsvegar að um landið. Börn eru velkomin á sunnudaginn með foreldrum sínum að teikna og lita!

Vinnustofurnar eru öllum opnar, óháð búsetutíma og ríkisborgararétti, og eru þátttakendum að kostnaðarlausu.

Verkefnið Mitt Atkvæði – Mín Rödd hefur tvívegis hlotið styrk frá Þróunarsjóði innflytjendamála félags- og húsnæðismálaráðuneytisins. Markmið verkefnisins er því að skapa nokkurs konar lifandi „áttavita- og umræðu vettvang“ þar sem þátttakendur fá tækifæri til að átta sig á réttindum sínum og hvernig allt virkar.

Það var Kveiksþátturinn „26 þúsund raddir sem ekki heyrast“ sem varð innblástur að verkefninu en í þættinum var fjallað um takmarkaða kosningaþátttöku íbúa með erlendan bakgrunn í sveitarstjórnarkosningum árið 2022.
